Frank (Fred) Leslie Cornwell, 64, of Independence, passed away peacefully on March 20, 2024, at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, Wis. 

 

Fred was born on Dec. 11, 1959, to Margaret J. (Bare) Croal and Glen E. Cornwell at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids.

 

Fred attended Central Community School through middle school and finished at Independence Community School. Growing up in an agricultural community, he was knowledgeable on multiple fronts. His early career was spent in the medical heath field working with the handicap and elderly. He moved his focus to manufacturing and grew expertise in many processes and fork truck operation and spent the last of his career as an over the road truck operator with his faithful pup Mo. Fred was a very talented artist, working in multiple disciplines, including pencil, charcoal, paint and air brush as well as becoming an accomplished guitarist, playing multiple genres of music, including Puff the Magic Dragon for children in his life. He was also an avid writer, including stories about his life events and travel. As he got older, Fred continued his love of playing guitars and found great joy riding his Harley Davidson motorcycles with his brother, cousin Dougie and friends. Fred was blessed with a colorful life and a stubborn streak complimented with a quick smile. He will be sincerely missed. 

 

Fred is survived by sister Nancy (Randy) Friedrich of Independence, sister Mary Shea (Scott Paul) of Volga, brother Patrick (Linda) Croal of West Union, sister Donna Sweet of Winthrop, sister Missy (Brian) Nichols of Mount Hope, Wis., brother Terry (Melissa) Cornwell of Harpers Ferry and brother Tony (Melissa) Cornwell of Prairie du Chien, Wis.; niece Theresa Huisman, nephew Tommy Shea, nephew Eric Croal, nephew Colin Croal, nephew Bill Slattery, niece Ebbie Sweet, nephew Nick Pecinovsky, niece Ashley Bryant, niece Izabella Pecinovsky, nephew Mason Pecinovsky, nephew Cahill Nichols, nephew Logan Nichols, niece Brittany Cornwell, nephew Chase Cornwell and niece Josalyn Benda; as well as many great-nieces and nephews.

 

Fred was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles.

 

A special thank you to Gundersen Palmer Hospital in West Union for the attentive and thoughtful care they provided.
