October 25, 1941–March 6, 2024

Gary W. Gokey, age 82 of La Crosse, formerly of Prairie du Chien, WI passed away on Wednesday March 6, 2024, at Gundersen Health System in La Crosse, Wisc. 

He was born on Oct. 25, 1941, the son of Daniel and Virginia (Breckler) Gokey. Gary grew up in Prairie du Chien, attending Catholic elementary school before graduating from Prairie du Chien High School with the class of 1960. 

He worked for National Decorated Metals in Prairie du Chien before taking a job as a welder for Trane Co. in La Crosse, where he worked for the next 10 years. Gary most recently drove a cab and bartended in La Crosse for several years. 

Gary married Phyllis Leirmo on May 16, 1998, at Freeman Lutheran Church in Ferryville, Wisc.  He enjoyed fishing on the Mississippi River near Pettibone and Houska Parks in La Crosse. 

He is survived by his wife of 25 years Phyllis; one son Lance (Kim) Gokey; brother Greg (Susan) Gokey; grandchildren Heather (Matthew Keene) Gokey and Josh Gokey; three great-grandchildren, siblings-in-law Beth (Jeff) Weibusch, Carrie (Jim) Brudos, Carl (Flo) Leirmo, Haldis Leirmo, and several nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Eugene Gokey, and parents-in-law Leslie and June Leirmo. 

According to Gary’s wishes, there will be no formal funeral services at this time.
