November 6, 1947–February 28, 2024

Jetta K. Mezera, age 76 of McGregor, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, February 28, 2024, at home surrounded by her family. 

She was born in Prairie du Chien on Nov. 6, 1947, the daughter of Allen and Camilla (Halink) Russell. Jetta graduated from Wauzeka High School with the class of 1966.

She married Francis Mezera on Feb. 26, 1965, at St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church in Prairie du Chien. Together, they moved to Kenosha, where they worked and started their family. After moving to Eastman, Wisc., in 1976, Jetta and Francis owned and operated Frank’s Market which eventually expanded to Prairie du Chien. 

They then moved to Twin Lakes, Wisc., where she would go on to achieve a bachelor’s degree in information technology while working at Motorola. She most recently moved back to McGregor, Iowa, where she worked for the 3M Company and Walgreens in Prairie du Chien until retirement. 

Jetta started her own business called “Jetta’s Way” in which she scanned and restored photographs and made DVD’s. She enjoyed playing Pinochle, traveling, and making the occasional trip to the casino. 

Jetta’s husband Francis preceded her in death on Sept. 17, 2007. 

She is survived by her companion Larry Burkhalter; four sons Rick (Beth), Gary (Becky), Brian (Rachel), and Kevin Mezera; siblings Sandra (Al) Krieg, Kristy Russell, Monte (Ann) Russell, Janie (Mike) Kirschman, Randy (Donna) Russell, Carney (Jodi) Russell, Greg (Tina) Russell, Lily (Dennis) Rider, Vicki Hendricks, and Dee Martin; grandchildren Kourtney (Shaun) Cowherd, and Justin, Chelsi, Drew, Caleb, Frankie, Jakob, and Jaiden Mezera; great-grandchildren Charleigh Donahue, Waylon Richardson, and Carter Cowherd; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother Allen Russell; sister-in-law Marie Russell, and brother-in-law George Hendricks. 

A Celebration of Jetta’s Life will be announced at a later date at the Horseshoe Tavern near Wauzeka, Wisc. The Garrity Funeral Home of Prairie du Chien is assisting the family. www.garrityfuneralhome.com.
