Denise L. King, age 67, of Elkader, passed away at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids on Feb. 23, 2024. She was born May 26, 1956, in West Union, the daughter of Philip J. Samuelson and Marjorie (Holloway) Samuelson. She was a graduate of Central Community High School in Elkader.

Upon returning to Elkader after living down south for many years, she attended Northeast Iowa Community College where she earned her associate degree in business. She enjoyed reading or listening to books, caring for her house plants, planting her favorite tomatoes in the summer and spending time with family and friends. She cherished and loved everyone who was there to support her while she courageously battled lung cancer. Whether it was helping with rides, providing meals or just checking in with a phone call, she was so thankful for all the love and support she received.

Surviving are her children: Teona (Troy) Wolford of Ocean Springs, Miss., Nicholas (Lisa Beatty) King of Monona and Zachariah King of Elkader; five grandchildren: Brandon and Macy Wolford, Kaylee and Winston King and Marlie Hettinger; two brothers: Dennis (Shelly) Samuelson of Marion and Sharm (Mary) Samuelson of Oelwein; one sister: Sheryl (Eric) Martinson of Merriam, Kansas; sister-in-law: Debby Samuelson of Cedar Rapids; friend and ex-husband, Rick King of Elkader; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, mother and one niece.

A celebration of life will be held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church Parish Hall in Elkader on Monday, March 11, from 5 to 7 p.m.
