North Crawford/Seneca junior Jaren Grimsled, qualified for the WIAA D3 Individual State Tournament for the first time in his high school career this past Saturday with his third place finish in the 106 pound weight class at the Mineral Point sectional.
Grimsled began his day with a pin of Whitehall’s Frank Juresh IV in 1:59 to advance to the semifinal round. Awaiting Grimsled in the semifinals was Cashton’s Parker Mlsna, who won by decision over Grimsled by a score of 7 to 1.
Pushed to the consolation side of the bracket, Grimsled pinned Riverdale’s Terry Sage in 1:43 to advance to the third-place match, with the winner clinching a top three finish in their weight bracket and a trip to the state tournament in Madison.
Awaiting Grimsled was Fennimore’s Jerrin Glasbrenner, who Grimsled had defeated 7-5 in the semifinals of the regional tournament the week prior. Like last weekend, it was Grimsled once again earning a tough victory as he pulled out a 4-2 win to clinch a top three finish and his first even trip to Madison. Mlsna lost in the championship match to Pecatonica/Argyle’s Aidan Gruenenfelder, which clinched second place for Mlsna thanks to his semifinal win over Grimsled.
Also wrestling at the sectional meet for the NC/S boys team was junior Thomas Sprosty at 138 pounds. Sprosty was pinned in 1:16 by New Lisbon’s Reid Sawyer in his first match, and then dropped an 11-1 major decision to Riverdale’s Sean Duffy in his seond match to conclude his season with a 28-16 record.
On the girls side, North Crawford got first place finishes from Franky Groom at 126 pounds and Adrianna Logue at 185 pounds to qualify for the girls state tournament. This is the first time in the co-op’s history that they have had state qualifiers from both schools in the same season.
Grimsled received the ninth seed in his bracket and will face off against eighth seeded Mlsna in the opening round of the state tournament on Thursday night with the winner advancing to face Gruenenfelder in the quarterfinals.
