The North Crawford/Seneca wrestling team began the road to the Kohl Center for high school wrestlers in Wisconsin on Saturday by competing at the Division Three Super Regional at Mineral Point High School.

The top four place winners at each weight in Divisions 2 and 3 each qualified for the sectional round that is to be held on Saturday, Feb. 17.

Leading the way for North Crawford/Seneca was junior Jaren Grimsled, who placed second at 106 pounds. After receiving a bye in the first round, Grimsled defeated Lancaster’s William Kratochvill by pin in 0:52 to advance to the semifinal round. Following a tough 7-5 win over Fennimore’s Jaylin Glassbrenner in the semifinals, Grimsled faced off with Pecatonica/Argyle junior Aidan Gruenenfelder for the third time in the last sixteen days. Gruenenfelder defeated Grimsled 16-1 to claim a technical fall victory for the regional championship at 106 pounds.

The loss dropped Grimsled into a potential wrestleback match for second place; however, Grimsled won by no-contest over Glassbrenner to claim second place thanks to Grimsled’s semifinal victory. This is Grimsled’s third time qualifying for the sectional round after placing fourth last year, and second in 2022.

Also earning a sectional birth for NC/S was junior Thomas Sprosty, who took fourth place at 138 pounds. Sprosty earned a first round bye before earning a 5-0 win over Ithaca-Weston’s Derek Franzen in the quarterfinal round. Riverdale’s Sean Duffy defeated Sprosty 16-0 in their semifinal match for the tech fall victory and subsequently sending Sprosty into a consolation match for third place with Fennimore’s Malin Hahn.

Hahn won by a score of 9-0 for a major decision and Sprosty was placed into the fourth place match against Mineral Point’s Quinten Kite for the fourth-and-final sectional qualifying place at 138 pounds. Sprosty was able to claim that spot with a tough 9-7 overtime victory over Kite to qualify for the sectional round for the first time.

Coming up just shy of earning a spot in the sectional round for NC/S was sophomore Sawyer Swiggum, who placed fifth at 190 pounds after medically forfeiting his fourth place match to Iowa-Grant/Highland’s Darren Laufenberg.

Also competing on the day for NC/S was ninth grader Sam Knoble at 113 pounds, and junior Jacob Glidden, who placed sixth at 144 pounds.

NC/S placed ninth out of 13 teams with 60.0 points.

Next up for the two NC/S qualifiers will be a return trip to Mineral Point on Saturday, Feb. 17 for the sectional meet.
