Hornet girls claim R&V Conference title outright
By Derick Kelly
Hoping to avoiding a let down in either of their last two conference games as they tried to win the conference championship outright, the Wauzeka-Steuben girls basketball team nearly had it happen when they traveled to Ithaca on Tuesday, Feb. 6.
Trailing 25-23 at halftime to the host Bulldogs, the Hornets had to out last the hosts 29-23 in the second half to claim a tough 52-48 victory. Cameron Hurda scored 19 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the three-point line to lead the Hornets offense. Ally Wall was the only other Hornet in double-figures as she finished with 14 points to go along with eight rebounds, five assists, and four steals. Macy Mitchell added five points, while Morgan Berger, Isabella Bunders, and Elizabeth Wright each scored four points with Natalie Wright added two points. Emma Wall was scoreless, but did collect eight rebounds, have two assists and force three steals.
The Hornets then traveled to Viola on Friday, Feb. 9 to face Kickapoo in the Hornets conference finale. Like she did against Ithaca three days earlier, it was the Cameron Hurda show as she made five-of-six three-point shots on her way to a game high 19 points as Wauzeka-Steuben defeated Kickapoo 65-47 to claim the outright Ridge and Valley Conference Championship with a 12-0 conference record.
Ally and Emma Wall each scored nine points, while Mitchell (eight points), E. Wright (seven points), Berger (six points), Bunders (3threepoints), N. Wright and Martha Backstrom (two points each) rounded out the individual Hornet scoring total for the game. Wauzeka-Steuben improved their overall record to 18-2 with the two victories.
Following a non-conference home game with Hillsboro on Monday, the Hornets will conclude their regular season schedule with home games against New Lisbon on Thursday at 7:15 p.m. and against Viroqua on Saturday at 2 p.m.
The Hornets earned the second seed in their half sectional and will host 15 seed Seneca in the regional quarterfinal round on Tuesday, Feb. 20, at 7 p.m. in Wauzeka.
