MFL MarMac wrestlers fall in regional dual

Nodaway Valley edged MFL MarMac 42-36 in the Class 1A regional team duals at Don Bosco on Jan. 30.

 

The 15th-seeded Bulldogs were vying with the #20 Wolverines for a second round dual versus second-ranked Don Bosco—the winner of which would advance to the state dual tournament on Feb. 3.

 

Nodaway Valley won the first two matches—a fall over Rylan Schroeder at 126 pounds and 8-4 decision against Gavin Kishman at 132—to take a 9-0 lead. Holden Mathis pulled the Bulldogs to 9-6, before the Wolverines added 12 points on MFL MarMac forfeits at 144 and 150 pounds. 

 

A pair of pins by Tristen Koehn (157) and Quinn McGeough (165) got the Bulldogs back in the win column, and trailing just 21-18, but Nodaway Valley scored another six points on a fall over Caleb Zuercher at 175 pounds. 

 

Dayne Kohrs earned a fall at 190 pounds, again bringing MFL MarMac within four points, at 27-24. The Wolverines then knocked off Nolan Lerch by fall at 215 pounds and edged Will Howes in a 7-2 decision at heavyweight to increase their advantage to 36-24. 

 

Wolfgang Martins Saboria received a forfeit at 106 pounds to bring the Bulldogs to 36-30 with two matches remaining. Although Keith Anderson pinned his opponent at 120 pounds, Gunnar Ross was not able to pull off a win at 113, giving Nodaway Valley the victory.

 

MFL MarMac wrapped up the week in a dual meet at Waukon on Feb. 2, where the team went 3-1 to finish its dual season with a record of 19-4.

 

One of the wins came 67-12 over Clayton Ridge, as the Bulldogs benefitted from eight forfeits. Kishman and Howes won their respective 132-pound and heavyweight matches, while Schroeder won by 10-0 major decision at 126 pounds and Anderson snagged a 12-9 win at 120.

 

The Eagles’ 12 points came by Bulldog forfeits at 106 and 165 pounds.

 

MFL MarMac bested Postville 66-18, racking up another seven wins due to forfeit. The Pirates picked up forfeit victories at 106 and 165 pounds.

 

Of the five matches that were wrestled, the Bulldogs won four. Kishman, Kohrs, Dracen Howe (215) and Averey Thornton (285) all won by fall, while Zuercher was pinned by his Pirate opponent.

 

The dual versus Central Springs was much closer, with MFL MarMac claiming a 48-36 advantage. The Bulldogs benefitted from just three wins by forfeit this time, securing their other points thanks to falls by Kishman, Mathis, Koehn, Kohrs and Lerch. 

 

Schroeder, Zuercher, Ty Koeller (120) and John Martins (144) were pinned by their opponents, and Central Springs earned another 12 points due to MFL MarMac forfeits at 150 and 165 pounds.

 

Waukon defeated MFL MarMac 54-25 in the final dual of the night, picking up three victories by forfeit. The Bulldogs had one.

 

Mathis, Kohrs and Howes all secured falls for MFL MarMac. Schroeder, Lerch and Ross were pinned in their matches and Zuercher lost by technical fall and Anderson by major decision. Kishman lost a 12-6 decision.

 

Next up for MFL MarMac is districts. The school will again host this year, on Saturday, Feb. 10. Wrestling will begin at 10 a.m. The top two finishers in each weight class will advance to the state tournament in Class 1A.
