Roland F. Clinton
Roland Frederick Clinton, 82, of McGregor, passed away peacefully with his wife by his side on Jan. 13, 2024, at Crossing Rivers Health in Prairie du Chien, Wis.
Roland was born on July 3, 1941, to Ruth (Baars) and Vernon Clinton of Littleport. Upon graduation from Elkader High School in 1959, Roland began serving his country in the Navy. He was an electrician on three different aircraft carriers during his service time, which included the Vietnam War. He retired from the service, achieving rank as chief petty officer. After his retirement, he moved his family to Whidbey Island, Wash., where he became a real estate broker raising his two sons. In 1988, Roland moved back to his childhood roots of Clayton County. He began buying and selling real estate while also working 10 years as a Merchant Marine captain engineer with the casino boats on the Mississippi River.
On July 31, 2009, Roland married Marguerite (Hermsen) Engelhardt of McGregor. They lived on Center Street until his death. He and Marguerite thoroughly enjoyed sitting on their deck with their dog Lilly, enjoying the beauty and wildlife of McGregor. Roland loved to hunt and fish, making yearly trips to Washington to join his sons and brother. He loved to research and repair just about anything and had an ability to envision the end result. Roland enjoyed competition motor sports, even owning pulling tractors and truck, spending countless hours with family and friends.
Roland is survived by his wife, Marguerite (Hermsen) Clinton of McGregor; children David (Kim) Clinton of Bickleton, Wash., and Gary (Sherri) Clinton of Yelm, Wash.; Marguerite’s children Jon Engelhardt of Madison, Wis., Rita (Eric) Nosek of Cedar Rapids and Rob Engelhardt of Tomah, Wis.; grandchildren Katelynn Clinton, Peter (Cigne) Clinton, Bryan Earick, Nick Earick, Kris Rickels, Devin Engelhardt and Meghan Rickels; great-grandchild Miller Clinton; sister Shirley Meyer; brothers Dennis (Rhonda) Clinton and Devere (Ellen) Clinton; and many nieces and nephews.
Roland was preceded in death by his parents Vernon and Ruth (Baars) Clinton; brothers Sheldon (BJ) Clinton and Nyal Clinton; brother-in-law Harlan Meyer; and uncle Delbert Baars.
A military inurnment will occur on July 3, at Iowa Veterans Cemetery at Van Meter in Adel. A celebration of his life will occur July 6, at Marquette.
