The North Crawford/Seneca wrestling team ran into some pretty stiff competition at the 41st annual Bi-State Classic at the La Crosse Center in La Crosse on Friday, Dec. 29, and Saturday, Dec. 30.
The co-op finished 16th out of 18 teams in Division Three and 68th of 72 teams overall with 16.5 points.
Leading the way was junior Jaren Grimsled at 106 pounds who went 2-2 and just missed placing in the top 12. Following a first round bye, Grimsled defeated Beaver Dam/Wayland Academy’s Landon Johnson via technical fall by a score of 15-0.
Grimsled then fell in a tough match to Goodhue, Minn’s Lucas Erickson by a score of 6-3 before recovering to defeat Monroe’s Owen Voegeli by decision with a score of 4-0.
Next up was Cashton’s Parker Mlsna who defeated Grimsled 4-1 in the consolation round match that determines the top 12 place winners. Grimsled’s overall record now stands at 23-3 on the season.
Thomas Sprosty went 2-2 at 144 pounds, falling two wins short of placing in the top 12. Sprosty defeated Stratford’s Lucas Forrest 8-6 in his first match before falling via technical fall to Baraboo’s Nolan Owen in a score of 15-0. Sprosty responded by pinning Eastview, Minn’s Sam Cohen in 1:17 before being eliminated by Belmont/Platteville’s Cam Spensley in a 15-0 technical fall. Sprosty’s record on the season stands at 15-7.
Jacob Glidden went 0-2 for the Trojans at 150 pounds, falling to Pulaski’s Mason Taylor via pin in 0:50 and to Nekoosa/Assumption/Port Edwards’ Wylie Cornwell via pin in 4:06.
Finally, sophomore Sawyer Swiggum went 1-2 at 190 pounds. Swiggum fell to Lodi’s Nick Week via pin in 3:19 in his first match before pinning Viroqua’s Andre Early in 0:12 to stave off elimination in the consolation bracket. In his next match though, it was Oconto Falls’ Nick Trepanier getting the upper hand as he defeated Swiggum via pin in 4:53 to end Swiggum’s tournament. Swiggum’s overall record on the season is now 17-7.
NC/S returns to the mats at the Lee Griffith Invitational at Kickapoo High School on Saturday, Jan. 6.
