Lynn Harriet Hall was born in Lombard, Ill., on Nov. 9, 1937, the second daughter of Ray and Alice Hall. She passed away at the Elkader Care Center on Dec. 30. 2023, at the age of 86.

When Lynn was 9 years old, her family moved to West Des Moines where she later graduated from Valley High School. She worked for an advertising agency and also for a veterinarian, while at the same time honing her skills as a fiction writer. Lynn was not a “city girl,” and after her first book was published, she decided she wanted to live a more quiet life. She spent a whole summer driving around Iowa in search of the perfect spot to settle down. She found that perfect place in northeast Iowa, near Elkader.

She purchased an acreage and built her dream home which she called “Touchwood.” The rural life suited her just fine. She wanted nothing more than to be surrounded by the beautiful Iowa countryside and the companionship of her dogs. She was inspired to write more than 80 books during her many years at Touchwood. Dog stories, horse stories, mysteries. Her books were very popular with millions of pre-teen readers for decades. One of her books, “Sticks and Stones,” earned an award for excellence in juvenile literature from the American Library Association.

A few years ago, when Lynn’s vision began to fail and driving became more difficult, she moved into town and spent her final years in her little house on First Street NW.

Lynn is survived by her sisters, Jan Hall of Des Moines and Lois Kahler of Cedar Rapids, three nieces and extended family. She will also be greatly missed by her dear friend, Pamm Geuder of Volga.

Visitation will be Wednesday, Jan. 10, from 4 to 7 p.m., at Leonard-Grau Funeral Home. There will be no other services at Lynn’s request.
