The Central girls wrestling team traveled to the Iowa City Liberty Girls Invitational last week, securing two third place finishes, one fourth place, one fifth place and one eight place.

Reese Berns, wrestling at 120 pounds, started the tournament off with a bye, before dropping a 7-2 decision in the quarterfinals. Berns went on to win the next four matches, the first three via pin, before taking the third place match by a 7-3 decision over Jordin Derr from Independence, who Berns lost to earlier in the tournament.

The other third place finisher was Mayleigh Medberry, who wrestled at 130 pounds. Medberry also started the tournament with a bye, but lost in the quarterfinals by pin. She won her next four matches via pin to take third place over Olivia Schminke of Vinton-Shellsburg.

In fourth place was Maci Keppler at 140 pounds. After a bye into the quarterfinals, Keppler lost via pin, before working her way into the third round match after a bye, medical forfeit and a fall. She lost her final match to Nina Peterson from Iowa City by pin.

Wrestling at 125 pounds, Taylor Moser received a bye into the quarterfinals, followed by a pin. She lost her next two matches, both close decisions, but bounced back with a 17-5 majority decision over Camden Erhardt of Vinton-Shellsburg to finish in fifth place.

Kimberly Suhr wrestled to eighth place at 135 pounds, going 2-3 in the tournament.

The team is off for winter break, but will return to action Jan. 2, for the Osage Girls Tournament. The Central Girls Invitational will follow on Jan. 5.
