Beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, 86, Joan L. Palmer of rural Colesburg died on Monday, Dec. 11, 2023, at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester.

In honor of her wishes, there will be no visitation or public services.

Joan was born the daughter of Lawrence W. and Frances (Hannig) Heller on Jan. 7, 1937 in Dubuque. She graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1955. She met the love of her life and was united in marriage to Robert A. Palmer at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Dubuque on Feb. 24, 1968. Several years later they adopted three brothers, Mark, Mike, and Donnie.

Joan had a deep love of all animals, which led to the purchase and move to a farm near Millville where they raised beef cattle. Going from life in the city to a farming operation was a major challenge for her, but she welcomed each and every animal they brought to their home. She especially looked forward to all the calves being born each spring.

In addition to raising cattle, Joan and Bob had horses to ride and many dogs and cats. Some of her favorites were an Arabian horse named Kasel, a German Shepard named Misty and a Chihuahua named Foxy.

Joan’s other interests were raising Shelite puppies, decorating cakes, putting on horse shows, line dancing, fishing, and gambling.

She will be missed by all who knew her, especially her husband of 55 years.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Lawrence “Larry” Heller.

Memorial cards may be sent to Robert A. Palmer, 36094 Millville Rd., Colesburg, IA 52035.
