River Ridge girls earn win at Benton after dropping road contest to Barneveld

Behind the junior duo of Reghan Zinkle and Mandi Wehrle, the Timberwolves of River Ridge left their hosts from Benton with a 43-41 victory in Six Rivers West girls basketball action last Thursday night.
The win is the first in conference action for coach Veronica Zinkle’s squad, who improved to 1-1 in league play and 4-3 overall which includes a 50-42 non-conference loss at Barneveld on Monday, Dec. 11. The Zephyrs fell to 0-2 in conference action and 2-7 overall.
Zinkle and Wehrle each posted 13 points Thursday night, Zinkle on 3-of-7 shooting from the floor and 7-of-12 from the free throw line, and Wehrle on 4-of-7 shooting from the floor, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range.
Wehrle also led the Timberwolves with nine rebounds and three assists, while Zinkle had three of her team’s 12 steals in the victory. Adding six points and five rebounds in the win was freshman Erin Adrian.
As a team, the Timberwolves made 14-of-35 (40 percent) shot attempts, including 3-of-13 (23 percent) from downtown. They were 12-of-23 (52 percent) from the free throw line, compared to 8-of-16 (50 percent) for the Zephyrs.
Following this past Tuesday night’s non-conference contest against visiting Southwestern, the Timberwolves travel to Shullsburg Friday night. They will play at the Juda Holiday Tournament on Wednesday, Dec. 27, along with Iowa-Grant and North Crawford.
