Timberwolf girls slip to 3-2 with loss to Belmont last week

Tied at 26-26 after one half of play, the host Timberwolves of River Ridge were outscored 23-13 in the second half by their visitors from Belmont in last Friday night’s 49-39 Six Rivers West girls basketball contest.

The loss dropped coach Veronica Zinkle’s squad to 3-2 early in the season and off to an 0-1 start in conference action.

Known for putting up a lot of 3-pointers, the Timberwolves had their struggles from long distance Friday night, making 1-of-21 (5%) attempts from downtown. From 2-point range they managed to knocked down 9-of-22 (41%) attempts, while also making frequent trips to the free throw line where they were 18-of-32 (56%).

Junior point guard Melissa Sletten led the Timberwolves with 12 points and two assists, while fellow junior Mandi Wehrle chipped in eight points, six rebounds and a team-high three steals.

Junior Lydia Mason added six points in the loss, while senior Shayna Graf pulled down a team-high seven rebounds to go along with five points.

Following this past Monday night’s non-conference contest at Barneveld, the Timberwolves travel to Benton Thursday night.
