River Ridge wrestling starts season at Royall, La Crosse

With 129 team points, coach Brad Lange and his River Ridge wrestling squad placed 14th of 16 competing teams at last Saturday’s La Crosse Wrestling Invitational.

Of the eight wrestlers competing for River Ridge, senior heavyweight Owen Callahan had the team’s best finish, bringing home fourth place in the 285-pound weight class.

Callahan went 2-3 on the day with pins in his first two matches, followed by three straight losses.

Finishing seventh in their respective weight classes were 106-pound sophomore Cameron Wehrle and 157-pound freshman Braden Skaife. Finishing ninth in the 150-pound weight class was sophomore Joe Childs, while tenth-place finishes were awarded to 120-pound senior Brady Burmeister and 175-pound sophomore Tyler Breuer.

On Saturday, Dec. 2, the Timberwolves began their 2023-24 season by traveling to Elroy to compete in the annual Royall Invitational. River Ridge placed ninth out of 14 teams with 49 points. Leading the way for the Timberwolves was Callahan,who tooked second in the 285-pound weight class. Callahan defeated Montello’s Arthur Soares via fall in 0:21 and Richland Center’s Brayden Kleppe via fall in 3:10 before falling in the finals to Westfield’s Stephan Foster by a score of 7-2.

Also placing at the meet for River Ridge was   Owen Bedward in the 132-pound weight class and Skaife in the 157-pound weight class as both wrestlers placed fourth in their respective weight classes.

River Ridge will host Belmont/Platteville this Thursday, Dec. 14  in a dual meet, and then will wrestle at the Richland Center Invitational on Saturday.
