North Crawford/Seneca wrestling took part in their first tournament of the 2023-24 season by attending the Waunakee Warrior Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 9.

Despite only entering three wrestlers into the tournament (the three all being from Seneca), North Crawford/Seneca still managed to tie with Appleton Xavier for 16th place out of 24 teams with 108 points.

Leading the way for NC/S was junior Jaren Grimsled who won the 106-pound bracket with a 5-0 record on the day. Grimsled defeated Waunakee’s Brett Farrell by decision 4-3 in his first match of the day before winning by pinfall over Kewaskum’s Carter Heimerman in 1:40, Waukesha South’s Blake Witt in 3:18, and Sun Prairie East/West’s Ramon Quintana in 2:33 to reach the first place match. Grimsled took home the championship with a 8-5 win over Lodi’s Bryer Caves.

Earning fourth place honors in the 144-pound bracket was junior Thomas Sprosty, who went 3-2 on the day. Sprosty earned pinfall victories over Mickai Miller (Waukesha South) in 0;45, Brody Blackbourn (Cuba City/Benton/SW) in 2:00, and Julian Vajada (Appleton Xavier) in 1:54. He dropped his final two matches of the day via fall to Gabriel Metzler (Waunakee) in 2:56 and Lukas Rue (Pecatonica/Argyle) in 0:48).

Sophomore Sawyer Swiggum rounded things out for NC/S with a sixth place finish at 215 pounds. Swiggum also went 3-2 on the day with wins via pinfall over Kaiden Neumann (Kewaskum) in 1:49, Dane Katz (Appleton Xavier) in 0:56, and Logan McIntyre (Sauk Prairie/Wisconsin Heights) in 0:47.

Swiggum was pinned by Lodi’s Isaiah Groskopf in 1:00 before falling to Ethan Kojis of Waukesha South by a score of 7-5 in the fifth place match.

Next up for North Crawford/Seneca wrestling team is a trip to Whitehall for the Whitehall Invite on Friday night, Dec. 15 before traveling to Stoughton on Saturday, Dec. 16 for the Badger State Invitational.
