The MFL MarMac boys basketball team evened its record at 2-2 last week, with wins over Edgewood-Colesburg and Turkey Valley and a narrow loss to Postville.

MFL MarMac built a 10-point lead heading into halftime of its Dec. 4 non-conference match-up at Ed-Co, but the Vikings out-scored the Bulldogs 16-11 in the third quarter to claw within five points. The MFL MarMac defense buckled down in the final period, however, holding Ed-Co to just seven points for a 54-43 win.

The Bulldogs’ 37.5 field goal percentage was just a tick better than the Vikings’ 36.4. Both teams hit three shots from behind the arc, but Ed-Co did so on 11 attempts while MFL MarMac took 21. The Bulldog offense also struggled to hit free throws, making only three of nine attempts.

What hurt the Vikings was turnovers, as they committed 28 to MFL MarMac’s 21. The Bulldogs forced 18 steals.

Junior Parker Kuehl accounted for nearly half of MFL MarMac’s scoring, hitting 10 of 20 shots for 23 points. Many came on breakaway baskets thanks to his team-high seven steals. Kuehl’s stat line also included six rebounds, three assists and a block.

Carver Blietz-Bentien finished the night with 11 points, six rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block. Landyn Miene totaled six points, two steals and an assist along with a team leading nine rebounds and two blocks.

The Bulldog offense came alive in an 88-36 win over Turkey Valley on Dec. 5. MFL MarMac shot over 55 percent from the field, including a 7-16 clip from three-point range.

MFL MarMac also handily out-rebounded the Trojans 41-16 and snagged 12 steals. Turkey Valley committed 19 turnovers while the Bulldogs had only seven.

Four Bulldogs shot over 57 percent from the field, including a 10-13 clip from Blietz-Bentien for 23 points. The senior completed the double-double with 10 rebounds and added five assists and four steals.

Miene was a nearly perfect 7-8 for 16 points, and snagged four rebounds, two blocks and an assist. Kuehl netted 14 points—six of which came from behind the arc—along with three rebounds and one each in the assist, steal and block columns. Carter Lightfoot fell short of a rare triple-double with nine points, nine assists, eight rebounds, four steals and two blocks. Eli Hanson contributed 10 points, six rebounds, an assist, steal and block off the bench.

Unfortunately, MFL MarMac couldn’t keep that momentum rolling in a 48-47 loss at Postville on Dec. 7. The game was back and forth until late in the third quarter, when the Pirates pulled ahead 38-31. Postville led by as many as 13 points in the final period before the Bulldogs rallied, including back-to-back threes from Kuehl and Blietz-Bentien with less than a minute to play. MFL MarMac settled for a two in the final seconds, after a game-tying three fell short.

The Bulldogs struggled from the field, hitting just 28.6 percent of their shots and four of 27 threes. They were out-rebounded by Postville 40-32.

The Pirates were hampered by 20 turnovers, including 10 Bulldog steals. MFL MarMac turned the ball over just 11 times.

Kuehl’s 19 points, nine rebounds and five steals led the Bulldogs. He also had three assists. Blietz-Bentien knocked down 15 points and earned eight rebounds, four assists, a steal and a block. Bryce Diehl contributed four points, six rebounds and an assist, while Miene had two points, five rebounds, two assists and three of the team’s four blocks.

On the docket for MFL MarMac this week is West Central on Dec. 12 and a home match-up with NFV on Dec. 15. The Bulldogs will compete in the Border Battle at Luther College on Dec. 16.
