Floyd Dean Possehl, of Elkader, died Dec. 6, 2023, at the Elkader Care Center.  Floyd was born Jan. 6, 1939, to Rudy and Rosalyn (Frieden) Possehl at the home farm near Elkader. He was baptized and confirmed at Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader. Floyd attended Boardman Township Country School and graduated from Elkader High School in 1958.

 

Floyd was united in marriage to Janice Lamker of Elkader on May 6, 1961, at Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader. To this union two children were born, Robert and Kent. Floyd started working at Dubuque Pack in Dubuque. The family moved back to Elkader in July of 1963. Floyd started working for Theis Clothing that same month and worked at Theis Clothing for 39 years. He bought into the business and later owned the store before his retirement in 2003.

 

In Elkader, Floyd was part of many organizations. He was a member of Peace United Church of Christ and served on the church council and pastor relations committee and sang in the choir for many years. Floyd also coached his boys’ baseball teams, helped lead the Worthwhile 4-H Club, sang in the barbershop chorus and was a member of the Jaycees for several years.

 

Floyd enjoyed golfing, bowling and watching his boys play sports. He also was a big fan of the Chicago Cubs, Iowa Hawkeyes and Coe College basketball. Floyd was the announcer at the Central High football games for many years. He kept the records for the family’s purebred hog business and, with Janice’s help, showed pigs at the National Hog Show in Austin, Minn.

 

Floyd is survived by his wife, Janice. They enjoyed 62 years together. He is also survived by sons Robert (Jean) Possehl of McKinney, Texas, and Kent (Angie) Possehl of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren Ellen (Jacob) Whitehurst of McKinney, Texas, Scott Possehl of Austin, Texas, Paige Possehl of Ft. Myers, Fla., and Spencer Possehl of Cedar Rapids; great-grandchildren Noah and Rhett Whitehurst; brother Rudy (Donna) Possehl of Goodyear, Ariz.; sisters-in-law Elaine Possehl of Monona and Amber Possehl of Eau Claire, Wis.; and brother-in-law Dean (Darlene) Lamker of Golden Valley, Minn.

 

Floyd was preceded in death by his parents, Rudy and Rosalyn Possehl, brother Bill Possehl, brother Rollin Possehl and sister-in-law Dorothy Possehl.

 

Funeral services will be Saturday, Dec. 16, at 11 a.m., at Peace United Church of Christ, Elkader, with Pastor Paula Anderson officiating.

 

Visitation will be Saturday, Dec. 16, from 9:30 until 11 a.m., at Peace United Church of Christ, Elkader.

 

Interment will be at East Side Cemetery, Elkader.

 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Mercy One Ambulance Fund - Elkader or Peace United Church of Christ Memorial Fund – Elkader.

 

Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Elkader is assisting the family.
