Gene A. Eglseder, 74, of Garnavillo passed away Monday, Nov. 20, 2023, at Guttenberg Municipal Hospital in Guttenberg.

Visitation was Saturday, Nov. 25, at Morris Funeral Home in Garnavillo.

Private inurnment was at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Garnavillo, conducted by Rev. Marvin Bries.

Gene was born on Aug. 13, 1949, in McGregor, the son of Allen and Jeanette (Kliefoth) Eglseder, the oldest of two sons. He graduated from Garnavillo High School in 1967. He married Joan Flaherty on Sept. 1, 1978 in Guttenberg.

Gene worked a number of years for the Double L Group in Garnavillo before deciding to farm alongside his father and brother. Later Gene was employed by D.R.I. (Roll-o-matic) for 21 years before retiring.

Gene enjoyed retirement as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother who found joy in the simple pleasures of life. His passion for family, the great outdoors, and the bounties of nature defined his existence. Whether casting a line by the water’s edge or patiently waiting in a quiet forest, he cherished moments spent fishing and hunting. However, his true pride lay in his vegetable garden and pumpkin patch. The autumn air was filled with the aroma of his hard work as he lovingly canned the harvest, eager to share the fruits of labor with his family and friends. A man whose heart was abundant as his garden, he leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories. May he rest in eternal peace, surrounded by the beauty he cultivated in life.

Survivors include his loving wife of 45 years, Joan; children, Laura (Todd) Marlowe, Jeffery Eglseder and Katie (John) Pope; grandchildren, Colin Welu, Caitlin Welu and Dane Pope; a brother, Rick Eglseder; in-laws, Jean (James) Gordon, James Flaherty, Julie Meek, and Carroll Flaherty.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and parents-in-law, Clare and Catherine Flaherty; and a brother-in-law, John Flaherty.

Information is available at www.morrisfuneralhomes.com. Memorials may be sent to Morris Funeral Home (in care of the deceased), 207 S. First St., Guttenberg, IA 52052.
