The Prairie du Chien Blackhawks Girls Basketball team opened up their 2023-24 season on Tuesday, Nov. 14 with a non-conference game at the Mount Horeb Vikings of the Badger South Conference.

After a slow first half by both teams in which the Vikings ended up taking a 22-19 lead into halftime, the Hawks came out strong in the second half. Following a back-and-forth start to the second half, the Hawks used an 11-0 run over 6 and a half minutes to take a 35-28 lead before a three-point basket by Viking guard Rowan Johnson made it a two possession game at 35-31.

The Hawks however never let the Vikings get any closer as Prairie closed the game out by out scoring Mount Horeb 12-6 over the last 8 and a half minutes of the game to earn a 47-37 victory.

Neither team shot particularly well during the game as Prairie du Chien shot just 26% from the field, while Mount Horeb was not much better at 29%. The Hawks outrebounded the Vikings 40-38, while the hosts had more assists (13) than the Hawks (4). The key stat line for both teams though was steals as the Hawks ended up with three times as many (16) as Mount Horeb (5).

Individually, leading the way for the Hawks were Tessa Czajkowski Higgins (12 points, 5 steals, and 3 rebounds) and Tannah Radloff (11 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals). Ninth grader Karly Kramer collected a double-double (10 points and 10 rebounds) in her first career varsity game (as well as collecting 5 steals), while Greenlee Krahn (7 points, 4 steals, and 3 rebounds), Rita Achenbach (4 points, 9 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, and 1 block), and Cam Knapp (3 points and 1 rebound) also added to the Hawks stat totals for the game.

Prairie du Chien moves to 1-0 with the road win, while Mount Horeb fell to 0-1. Following a home game against La Crosse Logan on Tuesday night, the Hawks return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 28 when they host Holmen.
