WISCONSIN RAPIDS – Putting the wraps on a fantastic freshman season, River Ridge’s Leah Patterson made the Timberwolf faithful proud at last Saturday’s Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association’s State Cross Country Championships.
With a time of 21:04.1, Patterson finished 59th of 152 runners in the division 3 girls competition, becoming the first state participant in school history for the River Ridge cross country program.
Patterson qualified for the state meet with an eighth-place finish among 120 runners at the D3 Poynette Sectional a week earlier.
At the Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids, Patterson got off to a fast start, running the first mile of the state meet in a blistering time of six minutes and 25 seconds.
Her second mile split came in at seven minutes and three seconds, and her third mile split was seven minutes and 37 seconds.
When looking at the freshmen who competed at Saturday’s state meet, Patterson had the tenth-best time of 31 competitors.
Winning the D3 individual title was Chequamegon senior Autumn Michalski with a time of 18:02.0, while Kohler freshman Maggie Behler was state runner up with a time of 18:55.4.
Winning the D3 girls team title were the Flying Arrows of Lancaster, with 92 points.
