MFL MarMac runner Jacob Schellhorn is headed to the state cross country meet for the third straight year. The junior punched his ticket by placing 10th, with a time of 17:08.9, at the Class 2A state qualifying meet at Monticello on Oct. 19.

“It’s pretty awesome—three times,” Schellhorn said.

This year was the toughest road yet, though. MFL MarMac moved up from Class 1A to 2A, pitting Schellhorn and other Bulldog runners against tougher competition.

Schellhorn was ranked 12th heading into last season’s state meet, in which he placed ninth. Last week, he was ranked 24th in Class 2A—a number he’s hovered around this season.

“It’s quite the difference,” Schellhorn said. “I’ve gotten bigger too, so I’m carrying more weight. But in the end, it definitely helps, because I feel like I can sprint a lot better.”

Sprinting was something Schellhorn didn’t have to do the week prior, when he won the Upper Iowa Conference meet by roughly 30 seconds. Not having a close challenger in that race made a difference, he said.

“The competition here is a lot better. Last week, it would have helped me for this race if I would have been pushed a little more. Winning by 30 seconds, I don’t get to sprint at the end,” Schellhorn explained. “Still, top 10 and I go to state.”

Schellhorn will compete at the state meet in Fort Dodge on Saturday morning, Oct. 28.

While last season presented more pressure to live up to expectations, Schellhorn wants to savor the experience this time. Success, he said, “is just having fun.”

Behind Schellhorn, MFL MarMac’s next boys runner was junior Tucker Ruff, who placed 38th in 18:24. Junior Malachi Ames used a time of 18:46.5 to finish 48th, while junior Logan Ross was 92nd at 22:33.9 and sophomore Wolfgang Martins-Sabrina 95th at 23:10.

The Bulldogs placed ninth of 14 teams with a score of 283. Waukon earned a 49 to win the team title, followed by Vinton-Shellsburg and Anamosa, who advanced to state with respective totals of 58 and 98.

The MFL MarMac girls similarly placed ninth in their race, with 210 points. Monticello edged Hudson 77 to 79 to take the top spot, and Tipton advanced to state with 106.

Sophomore Cora Keehner, a state qualifier last year in Class 1A, placed 19th at Monticello, just outside the top 15 needed for a return trip. She completed the race in 20:55.9.

Freshmen Brooke Donlon and Skylar Fisk were an impressive 33rd and 42nd. Donlon crossed the line in 21:48.3, while Fisk finished in 22:07. Senior Clare Grau’s time of 22:40.3 propelled her to 55th place, followed by junior Evelyn Ruff in 61st at 22:58.4. Sophomore Emma Koether was right behind her in 62nd place, after turning in a 23:05.2. Freshman Samantha Ruff closed out the Bulldog lineup in 66th place, with a time of 23:20.3.
