Peter Bellings, a beloved husband, brother, and friend, departed this world on Oct. 6, 2023, at the age of 70, at Mercy One Medical Center in Dubuque.
Visitation was Wednesday, Oct. 11, at the Egelhof, Siegert, and Casper Funeral Home and Crematory, Dubuque. A memorial service followed, conducted by Rev. Andy Upah.
Peter was born on March 16, 1953, in Dubuque, the son of Benjamin and JoAnn (Zittergruen) Bellings. On Feb. 14, 1987, he married the love of his life, Ginny Bankson, and their 36-year journey together was a testament to enduring love, often seen holding hands.
Peter’s educational journey began at Wahlert Catholic High School, where he graduated in 1972. He continued his education at Loras College and pursued a degree in HVAC from NICC. Peter contributed his skills and dedication as a Maintenance Technician at both the University of Dubuque and the Telegraph Herald.
Peter was a man of diverse interests and talents. He held a Coast Guard Pilot license, allowing him to navigate the Spirit of Dubuque riverboat as a riverboat pilot. His ability to fix anything and his fondness for gadgets made him a skilled handyman, a talent that brought joy to those around him. Peter was an adventurer at heart, relishing in activities like aviation, camping, traveling, motorcycle rides, and leisurely strolls with his faithful companion, Sunny. His generosity extended to the Dubuque community, where he donated an impressive 136 pints of blood.
Peter is survived by his cherished wife, Ginny; his siblings, Liz (Steve) Thor, Andy (Saiko) Bellings, and Ben (Sarah) Bellings; in-laws, Rick (Tracy) Bankson and Lori (Bruce) Peterson; nieces; nephews; great-nieces; great-nephew, and aunts and uncles.
Peter was preceded in death by his parents; his in-laws, and several uncles and aunts, including June Ihm of Guttenberg.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the Cardiac ICU staff at Mercy One Dubuque for their exceptional care during Peter’s final moments. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorials be made to the Dubuque Regional Humane Society or the Safe Haven Humane Society in Elizabeth, Ill. in Peter’s honor.
In memory of Peter, let us celebrate a life well-lived and remember the joy he brought to those fortunate enough to know him.
