Bret A. Moon
Bret Arthur Moon was born Jan. 22, 1968, at Central Community Hospital, Elkader to Terry and Anita (Schaub) Moon. He was baptized at Peace United Church of Christ, Elkader on Feb. 18, 1968. His sponsors were Dianne Sudol and Harry Moon. On March 20, 1983, he was confirmed at Peace Church.
He attended Garnavillo Community School, graduating in 1986. He then attended the University of Iowa for 1 ½ years until several bouts of mono forced him to drop out. While at Garnavillo, he was involved in baseball, track, basketball, FFA, and band. During his junior year of track he qualified for the state meet in the 100 meter dash, placing 6th in the final run to earn a medal. In his senior year he was a member of a trombone trio composed of John DeSotel, Tracy Hamann, and accompanist Robert DeSotel that earned a unanimous #1 rating at state music contest.
He loved all types of sports activities including car racing, Iowa Hawkeye sports, Minnesota Vikings, and Chicago Cubs. A highlight of every summer was the family bus trip to Chicago to see a Cubs game. He was also involved in adult softball with the St. Olaf league and a dart league. He was a great pet lover making sure his farm kitties got their food every day at 3:30.
He was employed at Double L in Garnavillo for several years as a welder until a building fire forced them to relocate. He then started working at Kann Manufacturing, Guttenberg as a welder. He continued employment there until complications from a stroke forced him to quit in 2021. On Aug. 9, 2023, he died at his home, the generational family farm near Clayton Center, due to another stroke.
He is survived by his mother, Anita Moon of Garnavillo; sister, Annette Frey of Postville; nieces, Emily (Bret’s godchild) and Katelyn Frey, Postville; uncle and aunt, Harry and Molly Moon of South Berwick, Maine; cousins, Jennifer (Doug) Cook and Ben, Emma, and Zoe of Austin Texas; Jeffrey (Laura) Moon of Minneapolis, Minn. Also special family friends, Carol and Troy Kruse of St. Olaf, Laura Morarend and family of Guttenberg, Nancy (Greg) McEowen and family of Dubuque, Jeanne Meisner and family of Garnavillo, and godmother, Dianne Sudol of Fennimore, Wis.
Proceeding him in death were his father, Terry in 1997; nephew, Brady Cameron Frey in 2003; maternal grandparents, Albert and Selma Schaub and paternal grandparents, Art and Ruth Moon; special family friends, Melissa and Irvin Kruse, Kevin Morarend, and Ivan, Randy and Rodney Meisner.
A celebration of life will held Saturday, Oct. 21, from 12-4 p.m. at the Garnavillo Community Center, Garnavillo.
Inurnment will be at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 22, at the Clayton Center Cemetery, rural Elkader, conducted by Pastor Karla Johnson.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Clayton Center Cemetery or a Humane Society of your choice.
