Helen Ambrose Schaefers, 93, of McGregor, formerly of Dubuque, died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2023, at Great River Care Center in McGregor. She was born on July 17, 1930, in Garnavillo, to Casper and Mary (Lucher) Schaefers. Helen was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph Catholic Church and also attended St. Joseph Catholic School in Garnavillo. 

 

Helen spent most of her years as a certified nurse’s assistant for Mercy Hospital in Dubuque. She lived a very simple life and was very devout in her Catholic church in Dubuque at Cathedral of St. Raphael. She enjoyed walking to work and walking everywhere. She loved gardening, flowers and loved watching birds and kitties. She was an avid reader and especially loved reading books by Louis L’ Amour and Zane Grey and other western books. 

 

Survivors include special family members, Alex (Teresa) Schaefers of McGregor, and their children, Tyler (Ashley) Rochleau, Robin (Evan) Landis, Alex Brown, Megan Rochleau, Blake Rochleau and Logan Brown; and nieces and nephews, Evelyn Petsche, Albert (Jean) Petsche, Leonard Petsche, Julie (Jack) Hensley and Carl (Beth) Petsche. 

 

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Oct. 12, at St. Mary Catholic Church in McGregor, with Rev. Martin Coolidge and Rev. John Moser concelebrating.

 

A visitation was held prior to the mass at the church.

 

Interment was at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in McGregor.

 

Thornburg-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, McGregor, is helping the family with the arrangements.
