The Central cross country season got off to a solid start Aug. 31, with both the boys and girls teams finishing in the top five overall, while also securing individual top fives, at the MFL MarMac meet.

Gavin Holst was the top finisher and a medalist in the boys run, placing fifth in 18:46.31. Central also collectively produced five personal records from Michael White, who ran to 18th, Vaughn Zittergruen in 28th, Caden Fette in 38th, Declan Finley in 41st and Bryce Heller in 51st. Other results included Henry Reimer in 22nd, Carter Krugger 24th, Carson Ruegnitz 29th and Jesse Polkinghorn 30th.

The Warriors finished the meet in second place behind Postville with 87 points.

“The boys placing second as team was definitely a highlight…considering just two years ago they didn’t have enough runners for a team score,” coach Mark Bauder said.

The Warrior girls finished fifth as a team with 126 points, led by Jaydin Dettman, who took the victory after running the race in 21:55.65.

“Dettman led from start to finish in a gutsy race as the second-place girl was closing in. Jaydin powered up the last big hill and finished the last several hundred yards with a great, determined stride and pulled away,” Bauder said.

Coral Rork ran a course personal record in 25:56.26 to finish in 27th, followed by Ashlyn Scherf in 32nd, Aspen Rork in 36th and Layla Embretson 40th. Alexis Thiese finished 51st, Madylen Gregerson 53rd, Hannah Friedlein 56th and Audrey Palas 61st.

The Warriors were scheduled to run at the Guttenberg Golf Course on Sept. 5, but the meet was not held due to heat.
