Last week was a tough one for the MFL MarMac softball team, which dropped a pair of doubleheaders to Upper Iowa Conference foes Kee and South Winneshiek.

The Bulldogs battled  the Hawks June 15, falling 13-1 in game one. Kee put up 15 hits on MFL MarMac starter Emily Troester, and scored eight runs in the first inning alone.

MFL MarMac managed just three hits—singles by Troester, Morgan Jacobson and Katelyn Gerndt. Gerndt had the team’s lone RBI.

Game two was a 12-7 win for the Hawks, who again benefitted from a big inning, with six runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Bulldogs trimmed the deficit with a four-run seventh, but couldn’t catch Kee.

Ashley Shaw accounted for two of the team’s five hits, knocked in two runs and scored once herself. Emme Wikner singled and doubled, drove in two runs and scored a run. Autumn Shaw was 3-3—including two doubles—and crossed the plate once.

Devon Meyer took the loss, after giving up 11 hits, five walks, a hit batter and 12 runs in six innings.

South Winn proved another tough opponent June 14, winning game one of the doubleheader 7-0. The game was scoreless through three innings, when the Warriors pushed a run across in both the fourth and fifth innings. They sealed the victory with a five-run seventh.

The Bulldog offense collected only four hits off South Winn pitcher Morgan Kleve. Three were from Wikner, who singled twice and doubled. Another base hit came from Ashley Shaw. Katelyn and Ayla Gerndt both drew walks.

South Winn’s offense continued to cruise in game two, amassing 22 hits and six walks in an 18-6 rout.

Despite racking up nine hits and four walks of their own, the Bulldogs couldn’t catch the Warriors. Katelyn Gerndt singled and doubled, stole a base, knocked in a run and scored once. Ashley Shaw earned a pair of base hits, a stolen base and one RBI. She also scored a run. Ayla Gerndt was 2-3 with a walk, stolen base and run scored, while Kaitlin Picha accounted for a hit, walk, stolen base, two RBIs and a run.

MFL MarMac wrapped up the week June 16-17 in a tournament at West Delaware. The Bulldogs lost one of their games 10-0 to Assumption. No other scores were recorded.

The team, which is now 5-5 in the Upper Iowa Conference, will look to move up the standings this week with doubleheaders against Central on June 19 and Clayton Ridge June 21. The Bulldogs will host Central City June 23, then play in a tournament at Dunkerton on June 24.
