The Prairie du Chien American Legion baseball program recently purchased and installed a brand-new scoreboard at Dillman Memorial Field on St. Feriole Island thanks to years of fund-raisers and the generous help of parents and community members.
When the St. Feriole Island ballparks opened for play in the fall of 2004, a used scoreboard was purchased at the time for use at Dillman Memorial Field. Little did anyone know at the time that the used scoreboard they had purchased second hand would go on to last almost twenty years.
With the Hoppers set to host the 2023 Wisconsin American Legion Class A State Baseball Tournament in late July 2023 and the scoreboard starting to become inoperable, it was decided that this was the time for a new scoreboard. After taking time to search for a replacement scoreboard that would fit the needs of the field and the program, and at a reasonable price, one was located, purchased, and installed thanks to the hard work of many people and businesses around the community.
According to PdC Legion Baseball Head Coach Nate Cejka, “We have many people to thank for their help and involvement. Big thanks to Tom Mara for heading this project as it took a lot of time out of his busy work schedule to make this happen. Big thanks to Wolf Machine for supporting this project as well. Thanks also go out to Kevin Mallat for all the welding, Steve Sagedahl and Design Homes for the crane, Mike Kozelka for getting the wiring done, Tom Novey for the boom lift, and all the helping hands who helped put this up. Thanks, as well to the community businesses and members that helped sponsor the scoreboard: Prairie du Chien Kiwanis Club, Southwest Bus, Sports World, PdC Dentistry, Southwest Collision Center, Fillback, and the Doug Dickman family.”
The PdC junior legion team began the 2023 campaign with a doubleheader at West Salem on Thursday, June 1 at 6 p.m. with the first home games coming against Viroqua on Monday, June 5. The varsity team will start play with a doubleheader at Bi-State (Onalaska Luther) on Thursday, June 8 at 5 and 7 p.m. The Hoppers first home game will be on Monday, June 12 against Riverdale at 5 p.m.
