The MFL MarMac baseball team last week evened its record at 3-3, following a doubleheader sweep of Postville, non-conference loss to Midland and split with Kee.

Bulldog pitchers Jacob Schellhorn and Bryce Radloff threw a combined five-inning no hitter in a 10-0 game one win over the Pirates on May 23. Three walks by Radloff were the only blemishes on the pair’s stat line. They struck out eight batters.

The MFL MarMac offense, meanwhile, cranked out eight hits, seven walks and three hit by pitches, in addition to swiping 14 bases.

Schellhorn was a nearly perfect 3-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, and Ben Krambeer singled, walked twice, drove in two runs and scored once. They each stole two bases. Brayden Gordon doubled, walked and knocked in a run, while Radloff singled, was  hit by a pitch and stole a team-high three bases before scoring twice.

Game two was an even bigger offensive outburst for the Bulldogs, who piled on 10 more hits, six walks and two hit by pitches in a 17-0 victory.

Gordon was 2-2 with four RBIs, a stolen base and a run scored. Jaxon Millage singled, walked and was hit by pitch, swiped two bases and drove in a pair of runs. He also scored three times. Carver Blietz-Bentien finished the game 1-2 with two RBIs and a run scored. Another two RBIs came from Cayl Anderson, and one was courtesy of Parker Kuehl, who singled, walked twice, stole two bags and scored three runs.

Krambeer walked just one batter and struck out four over two innings on the mound. Millage surrendered a hit and a walk, along with earning two strikeouts, in one inning of work.

The following night was a much tighter match-up, as an MFL MarMac rally came up short in a 5-4 loss to Midland.

The Bulldogs out-hit the Eagles 10-6 and walked twice more, but Midland got the big hits—literally. Eagle freshman Anthony Harrington went deep twice off MFL MarMac pitcher Austin Evanson, accounting for four of the team’s five runs.

Evanson gave up only two other hits and a walk the rest of the game and struck out four batters. Only two of the five runs he surrendered were earned.

Landon Johnson led the MFL MarMac offense with two hits, an RBI and run scored. Blietz-Bentien added another two hits, a walk and a stolen base, while Elias Hatt singled and doubled. Kuehl was 1-4 with an RBI.

The Bulldogs wrapped up the week with a doubleheader split at conference rival Kee. Game one went to MFL MarMac 3-0, behind a stellar pitching performance by Schellhorn. The sophomore allowed four hits and four walks—and struck out two hitters—in six scoreless innings. Millage gave up two hits and a walk in a relief inning.

MFL MarMac’s offense book ended the game with two runs in the first inning and one in the seventh. Four players—Blietz-Bentien, Millage, Johnson and Dustin Larson—had a pair of hits. One of Millage’s was a double, and he drove in two runs and scored once himself.

Game two was another impressive pitching performance, as Krambeer held the Hawks to one hit in an inning and two-thirds and Millage allowed three hits, two walks and a hit batter over four and one-third innings. Kee scored the game’s only two runs in the bottom of  the fifth.

The Bulldogs were held scoreless despite totaling eight hits—six of which were singles—and four walks. Blietz-Bentien doubled and walked, and Austin Schlee singled and picked up a sacrifice.

This week is a little lighter for MFL MarMac, who will host non-conference Alburnett on May 31, before welcoming another top UIC contender, South Winneshiek, on June 1.
