Violet “Vi” Louise Sadewasser, 101, of Elkader, passed away on Sunday, April 16, 2023, at Elkader Care Center in Elkader. Family will greet friends and family from 9 to 11 a.m. on Monday, May 22, at Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. on Monday. There will be a lunch immediately following the service. Burial will be at the Garnavillo Cemetery in Garnavillo.

Vi was born July 2, 1921 to John and Alma (Steinkamp) Graul in Mascoutah, Ill. On April 8, 1944, Vi was united in marriage to W. W. “Bill” Sadewasser in Mascoutah, Ill. Four children were born to this union. Vi provided in home preschool childcare for 25 years. She enjoyed gardening, her flowers, birds and listening to the radio. Vi taught Sunday school for many years and was active in her bowling league, church circle and the American Legion Auxilary.  She took great joy in baking and cooking, especially for family holiday gatherings.

We had the best mother anybody could ask for. She let us be kids, play and have fun. She taught us to value life and to be independent. There were very few things that she couldn’t fix or do. We all miss our daily conversations with her. We were lucky to have her share her wisdom for so long.

Surviving Vi are her children, Sharon (William) Gentsch of Des Moines, Sandra (William) Mierkiewicz of Sterling Heights, Mich., Deborah Sadewasser of Marion and George (Kathryn) Sadewasser of Iowa City; grandchildren, Mark (Rachel) Gentsch, Drew (Dawn) Gentsch, Jennifer (Steven) Dewar, Nathan (Cassie) Sadewasser and Jana (Jake) Warning; great-grandchildren, Zachary and Alex Dewar, Walter and Meghan Gentsch, Charlotte Gentsch, Celia, Michael and Tahlia Sadewasser and William and Grace Warning.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Alma Graul; husband, W. W. “Bill” Sadewasser on June 21, 2007; son-in-law, Don Naaktgeboren; and eight siblings.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Vi’s memory may be directed to the family, to be designated later.
