Chilly weather during the April 6 Starmont Girls Invitational did little to slow down the Central Warriors, who put on a dominant performance, winning nine of the 19 total events. That included 37 top 10s and 16 new personal records, as the team won the meet by 93 points.

Two of the Warriors’ nine victories came in the field events. In the high jump, Brooke Tieden cleared the bar at 4-08, while Eva-Rosa Van Der Heide finished second with a personal record height of 4-06. Eva Embretson placed eighth and Tessa Sylvester was ninth.

The other win came via Hannah Asche in the long jump, where she earned a personal best jump of 15-07.25. Lexi Loan came in third with a jump of 13-08, followed by Oakley Armstrong in seventh, Savannah Orr eighth and Gracie Cummer ninth.

The shot put was equally successful, with Delaney Scherf putting up a throw of 31-03.50, which was good for second place. Madelyn Gregerson finished fifth at 27-01.50, which was a personal record, and Marissa Rew in 10th had a personal best 24-03.5. Alexis Thiese finished 12th and Zoey Hyde 13th.

The discus featured four Warriors, with Layla Embretson the top finisher in fifth place, with a throw of 77-02.50. Staci Herman came in ninth, Rew 10th and Hyde 14th.

The sprint races included two more wins for Central. Tori Sylvester ran past the competition in the 100 meter dash, finishing in 13.09, which was almost three-tenths of a second ahead of the second place runner. Grace Kuehl placed third with a time of 13.60 and Eva Embretson was 19th at 14.69.

Kuehl also ran in the 200, finishing second in 28.36 seconds, just one-tenth out of first place. Armstrong ran eighth in 31.25, while Eva Embretson was ninth with a time of 31.45 seconds.

The 400 featured a one-two finish for the Warriors, as Asche took the win in 1:03.01, and Scherf was close behind at 1:04.31.

Central competed in two of the three distance races, including the 800 meter run, where Layla Embretson was fourth with a time of 3:02.95. Thiese ran the 1500 in 6:21.57, which was good for second place.

In the hurdle events, Taylor Moser turned in a second-place time of 18.33 in the 100-meter event. Loan was right behind her in third with a time of 18.60, and Alivia Wiley finished the race ninth.

The 400-meter hurdles was another Warrior one-two finish, with Jaydin Dettman crossing in first place in 1:15.21, five seconds ahead of teammate Moser, who hit the line in 1:20.20.

Central continued to add victories in the relays. Moser, Cummer, Gregerson and Loan were tops the 4x100-meter shuttle hurdle race in 1:20.28. In the 4x100, Kuehl, Cummer, Loan and Tessa Sylvester combined for a time of 57.09 seconds, less than two seconds ahead of second and third place.

The 4x400 saw a wider margin of victory, as Scherf, Tori Sylvester, Dettman and Asche crossed the line 25 seconds ahead of second place with a time of 4:28.65. The largest margin of victory, though, was in the 4x800, which the Warrior team of Scherf, Moser, Dettman and Asche won by over three minutes, running the only sub-11-minute race with a time of 10:56.46.

Additionally, the Warriors were second in the 800 sprint medley with Kuehl, Tori Sylvester, Tessa Sylvester and Wiley running a 2:08.95.

The distance medley of Armstrong, Layla Embretson, Herman and Thiese was third thanks to a time of 5:25.18.

Also third was the 4x200 made up of Gregerson, Orr, Eva Embretson and Tessa Sylvester, whose 2:09.60 time was six seconds out of first place.

“It started out a little chilly mainly due to wind, but it got better and ended up being a great meet. We had gotten Tuesday’s meet cancelled at Postville, so the girls were very ready for the meet. And since there were only six teams, it went pretty fast,” said coach Martha Bauder. “We were happy with so many personal records and season bests and are looking forward to next week when the weather is supposed to warm up quite a bit.”

Next for the Warriors is an April 13 meet at Decorah High School.
