Roy J. Murphy, 77, of Volga, died, Saturday morning, Jan. 14, 2023, at UnityPoint Health - St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids.

 

Roy Jere Murphy was born July 8, 1945, in Oelwein, the son of Donald “Dutch” and Betty (Windenberg) Murphy. He attended school in Wadena. Roy rode bulls and broncs in northeast Iowa rodeos. On June 20, 1970, he was united in marriage to Darlene Mae at Elkport. At the age of 17, Roy started driving semi. Over the years, he drove for Jerry Everitt, Beatrice, Agri, Viessmann and was currently driving for Agri. Roy was very proud of the million-mile safe driving plaque he received. Roy was a member of the Wadena Community Church and the Volga River Riders Saddle Club. He enjoyed horses, trail rides, camping, working around the acreage, fixing things, telling stories and cutting wood. Roy especially loved mentoring and teaching his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

 

Roy is survived by his wife of 53 years, Darlene Murphy of Volga; three children, Shayne (Diane) Murphy of Manchester, Stacy (Mark) Fletcher of Arlington and Shawn Murphy (Amy Kephart) of Hawkeye; 15 grandchildren, Nathan and Brittany Murphy (fiancé Cade Demro), Jason Briggs (Kelly Fairbanks), Jessie (Jacob) Kramer, Julie Briggs (Jake Haynes), Jonathan (Nevaeh) Briggs, Hunter Fletcher (Jinna Latham), Avery Fletcher, Marlan Fletcher, Gracie Fletcher, Sofie Fletcher, Chasity (Brandon) Clayton, Cheyenne Murphy, Shawn Murphy Jr. and Christina Murphy; eight great-grandchildren, Jackson, Jaylnn, Jennifer, Mylah, Sarina, Jamison, Juddson and Grant; four siblings, Audrey Hoffer of Randalia, Marilyn Bolte of Albert City, Jim Murphy of West Union and Dorothy Eckheart of Arlington; his wonderful dog Bo; and several nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Jere Murphy; and sister, Donna Lane.

 

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 20, at the Wadena Community Church in Wadena, with Rev. Rusty Phillips officiating.

 

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 19, at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Arlington, and for one hour before the service at the church on Friday.

 

Interment will be at the Wadena Cemetery, Wadena.
