The Central boys basketball team is still searching for its first Upper Iowa Conference win, following losses last week to North Fayette Valley and MFL MarMac.

The Warriors played at North Fayette Valley Jan. 3, and were in the lead after the first period, 12-11. However, a 22-point outburst by the TigerHawks in the second period, paired with a Warrior offense that only managed six points, allowed NFV to take a commanding lead into halftime. The TigerHawks eventually handed Central its fourth conference loss by the score of 57-41.

Part of the struggles came from the TigerHawks’ ability to limit Central’s leading scorer Dan McGreal, who finished with just nine points on three for 11 shooting. Tate Berns led the Warrior offense with 10 points and added five rebounds, while Caden Erickson finished with 10 points, two assists and two steals.

The loss was aided by 21 Warrior turnovers, which have plagued the team since last season.

The fifth conference loss came by way of the MFL MarMac Bulldogs, who picked up a 73-38 victory over the Warriors Jan. 6. McGreal was again held in check with just seven points, five of which came from free throws. Leading the team was Gabe Erickson with nine points, five rebounds and three assists. Isaac Loan added eight points and four rebounds, while Caden Erickson put in six points and Elliot Kelly dropped four along with three rebounds and three assists.

The Warriors shot well in the game, going 14 for 35, but the Bulldogs put up 60 shots and made twice as many as the Warriors. Central was also out-rebounded 34-21, gave up 18 steals and committed 30 turnovers.

The Warriors are now 2-6 on the season and have fallen to eighth place in the conference heading into a three-game slate this week. It started Jan. 9 at Central City, then the Warriors returned home for a conference match-up versus 6-4 South Winneshiek on Jan. 10. The team will finish the week off at 2-5 Kee on Jan. 13.
