The MFL MarMac boys wrestling team continued to roll last week, picking up four more dual wins as well as its second tournament championship of the season.
The four dual wins came in the Jan. 5 Upper Iowa Conference Duals at Postville, where the Bulldogs defeated Clayton Ridge, Central, Tripoli and South Winneshiek to improve to a perfect 17-0 on the season.
Both duals against Clayton Ridge and Tripoli resulted in 78-6 victories for MFL MarMac. The Bulldogs picked up a combined 14 wins by forfeit against the smaller squads, but also took care of business on the mat.
Karter Decker, wrestling at 152 pounds against Tripoli and 145 against Clayton Ridge, secured falls in both matches, as did Quinn McGeough at 160, Nolan Lerch at 195 and Taylor Herzmann at 220. Bryce Radloff (138), Dayne Kohrs (170) and Keith Anderson (113) also had falls versus the Eagles.
The lone losses in those duals came at 182 against Tripoli, where Bulldog Caleb Zuercher was pinned, then a forfeit at 106 pounds against Clayton Ridge.
The dual against Central was a similar 70-12 score in favor of the Bulldogs, who picked up falls from Anderson, McGeough, Zuercher, Wyatt Mohs (106) and Rylee Kugel (126). Holden Mathis won a 10-0 major decision at 132 pounds. Another six MFL MarMac wins came by forfeit.
The Warriors’ 12 points were from falls over Jarett Hanson at 120 pounds and Dracen Howe at 170.
MFL MarMac’s closest dual was a 51-28 advantage over South Winneshiek. While the Bulldogs benefitted from three forfeits in these match-ups, the team was also boosted by falls from Kugel (126), Decker (152), McGeough (160), Anderson (113) and Austin Schaller (182), while Mathis secured a 7-0 decision at 132 pounds.
Radloff (138), Lerch (195), Mohs (106) and Hanson (120) were all pinned by their opponents. Clayton Freese was on the wrong end of a 9-0 major decision at 145 pounds.
The success carried over into the Jan. 7 Farr Jebens Invitational at Maquoketa Valley, which the Bulldogs won with 173 team points. That total edged Jesup by two points and East Buchanan by five.
Mathis claimed his second individual championship of the season at 132 pounds, while Kugel and Radloff finished just off the top of the podium in their respective 126- and 138-pound classes.
Anderson (113), Decker (145) and Will Howes (285) each finished third, and McGeough (160) and Herzmann (220) were fourth.
Kohrs (170) and Lerch (195) both won their fifth place matches, and Mason Overton was sixth at 285 pounds. Mohs and Freese were seventh at 106 and 138, respectively, while Hanson and Averey Thornton came in eighth at 120 and 220.
The Bulldogs will be back on the mat Saturday, Jan. 14, at their own MFL MarMac Invitational. Wrestling will begin at 10 a.m.
