Blackhawk wrestlers place third in Division 3 at Bi-State Classic

LA CROSSE – With 184.5 total points, Prairie du Chien’s varsity wrestling team finished third among 26 division 2 teams competing at last week’s Bi-State Classic in La Crosse.

The Blackhawks had four individual wrestlers finish among the top six in their respective weight class, and combined to score 132.5 of their team’s total points at the two-day tournament.

Leading the charge was Rhett Koenig, who at 138 pounds finished second in his weight class and scored a team-high 40.5 points for the Blackhawks.

Koenig went 5-1 at the tournament, winning his first two matches by pin, his third by technical fall and his fourth by major decision.

In his semifinal match, he defeated Easton Worachek of Luxemburg-Casco by a 4-2 decision, earning a spot in the finals, where he met up with Mineral Point’s Lucas Sullivan (20-0).

Sullivan gave Koenig his first and only loss of the season with a pin in 5:07, leaving Koenig with a season record of 16-1.

Earning third-place finishes in their respective weight class and earning 33 points each for their team were Luke Kramer at 152 pounds and Blake Thiry at 195.

Kramer went 6-1 on the day, losing only his semifinal match to Jacob Ward of Bay Port by a 5-1 decision.

After winning his first four matches with two pins and two decisions, Kramer followed up his semifinal loss to Ward with a 1-0 decision in his consolation semifinal, and then a 3-1 decision over Kaleb Lochner of Zumbrota-Mazeppa in his third-place match.

After going 6-1 at Bi-State, Kramer now has a season record of 17-2.

Thiry started his tournament off with four consecutive victories, including a 5-2 ultimate tie-breaker in his quarterfinal match.

In the semifinals, Hayden VanderVort of Hutchinson/Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart handed Thiry a 5-1 loss, sending Thiry into the consolation bracket.

There, he fought his way back into third place, winning a 7-3 decision in his consolation semifinal match and a 3-2 decision over Ayden Goetzinger of Caledonia/Houston for third place.

After going 6-1 at Bi-State, Thiry now has a season record of 18-1.

Prairie du Chien’s only other place winner at the two-day tournament was 160 pounder Jeremiah Avery, who now has a season record of 16-4.

Avery went 5-3 at the tournament, winning his first three matches with two pins and one decision. He suffered a pin in his quarterfinal match to Robert Flege of Aquinas, sending him into the consolation bracket.

There, he won his next two matches by decisions of 3-1, before losing his consolation semifinal by fall, and then his fifth-place match by a 12-5 decision.

Among the eight other wrestlers who did not place at Bi-State, Ryder Koenig (8-3) collected the most points of 10.5 in the 132-pound weight class.

Other Blackhawk wrestlers with their current season records include: Porter Kossman (4-5), Mason Hird (10-2), Drew Hird (12-4), Bryce Lenzendorf (6-5), Brogan Brewer (12-4), Jack MacEchern (4-3) and Dylan Wright (7-4)

Also, at the girls’ Bi-State Tournament, Irelynd Cejka earned top honors in her 122.9-pound weight class, going 3-0 with three pins.

Cejka pinned Allison Weiss of Holmen in 3:27, Annika Kirchner of Chatfield in a time of 1:20, and Zoye Hilby of Dodgeland in a time of 2:00.
