Blackhawks win conference title

Prairie du Chien came out on top 30-21 in a tough SWS football game against visiting Brodhead-Juda Friday night at John C. Mulrooney Field. 

Prairie scored with 7:24 to play in the first quarter when Max Schneider blocked a punt and it was recovered in the end zone by Blake Thiry. The kick was good and the Blackhawks led 7-0. 

Maddox Cejka passed to Thiry for a 34-yard TD and the PAT was good as Prairie led 14-0 with 6:29 to go in the first period. 

Brodhead scored at the 5:08 mark of the first quarter on a 10-yard pass to get to within 14-6. 

With 2:27 to go in the first period, the Cardinals scored on a 2-yard run. The 2-point pass was good and the game was tied 14-14. 

Joey Xiya hit a 26-yard field goal to give Prairie the lead at 17-14 ith 9:53 to go in the first half. 

Brodhead scored on a 43-yard run at the 9:29 mark of the first half and the kick was good as the Cardinals led 21-17. 

Cejka connected with Thiry for a 34-yard TD with 16 seconds to play in the half as the Blackhawks took the lead back at 23-21.

Cejka found Thiry again on a 22-yard TD with 6:09 to play in the third quarter. The PAT was good and Prairie increased the margin to 30-21. 

There was no scoring in the final frame and the Blackhawks were victorious. 

Rhett Koenig had 15 carries for 69 yards for Prairie du Chien. Ty Wagner had 15 carries for 62 yards. Kurt Wall had 4 carries for 4 yards.

Cejka was 8 of 16 passing for 165 yards and 3 touchdowns. 

Thiry caught 8 passes for 165 yards and 3 TDs. 

Luke Kramer was in on a total of 15 tackles with 2.5 for a loss. Drew Hird had 12 tackles. Kurt Wall had 12 tackles, including 1 for a loss. Thiry had 7 tackles, including a sack and a tackle for a loss.

Prairie improved to 6-2 on the season and 6-0 in the SWC to win the conference crown. The Hawks will next travel to Montello on Oct. 14.

Brodhead-Juda dropped to 6-2 overall and 4-2 in the SWC, tied for second with Lancaster.
