The War of 1812 Battle for Prairie du Chien happened here in 1814, when the U.S. and British troops clashed on what is today the west lawn of the Villa Louis. The reenactment is an entertaining historical opportunity for all ages. Don’t miss it this weekend. (File photo)

Villa Louis is gearing up for its 30th annual War of 1812 Battle for Prairie du Chien Reenactment taking place this weekend, July 16 and 17, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. both days.

The War of 1812 came to Prairie du Chien in 1814, when U.S. and British troops clashed on what is today the west lawn of Villa Louis. Learn about the British assault on U.S. Fort Shelby in a battle scenario held Saturday and Sunday afternoons at 2:30 pm.

This event is a favorite tradition for many and offers visitors a chance to take in a fascinating story of American history by engaging the senses—see the flash of muskets, hear the roar of a cannon and watch infantry and artillery drill inspections to be transported back in time to 1814. This is a family-friendly event with experiences for the whole family to enjoy, including a grand parade, hands-on archaeology demonstrations and historically-inspired lawn games.

Event admission includes a tour of the Villa Louis mansion. Mary Antoine, author of “War of 1812 in Wisconsin,” will be on site for an author Q&A and book signing opportunities.

Tickets can be purchased online (https://villalouis.wisconsinhistory.org) or the day of the event. A food stand will be available, sponsored by the Friends of Villa Louis.
