Lupines in bloom at remnant prairie along Wilderness Road
By Ted Pennekamp
The remnant prairie along Wilderness Road on the right side as one drives up the hill is thriving with the blueish, purple color of thousands of lupines at the moment.
“The prairie was burned this spring and thousands of lupines is the result,” said Dennis Kirschbaum who helps tend to various aspects of La Riviere Park of Prairie du Chien. “The prickly pear cactus will be blooming in a couple of weeks.”
Dennis said the portion of the 3.5-acre prairie with the lupines and cactus has never been plowed, and has been managed since December of 2018. He noted there is also an emerging oak savanna on the property, along with the Blackhawk Trail with interpretive signs for the education and enjoyment of hikers and other visitors.
