Roger William Allert, age 74, of McGregor, passed away Wednesday, June 1, 2022, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minn. He was born March 7, 1948, the son of LaVerne and Betty (Bachtell) Allert. He grew up in the McGregor area and graduated from Mar-Mac High School. In 1967, Roger and his good friend Carroll “Booner” Henkes enlisted in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He drove a tank while serving in the 5th infantry division. After his service, he worked construction in Florida and Texas before moving to McGregor in 1976. Roger married Vickie Smrcina in 1980 at the United Methodist Church in Prairie du Chien, Wis. Together, they moved to Littleton, Colo., where he spent nine years working for his brother-in-law, Jim Orr, installing windows with his brother Ron. He then moved his family back to the area, where he worked at McGregor Roofing and then at M’s Machine and Manufacturing Company in Monona until retirement. Although Roger and Vickie spent many years apart, they found their way back to each other and remarried in July 2019. Roger loved riding horses and spending time at the ranch. He loved sharing his special Ramjet beans and his homemade barbecue with friends and family.  He was the star performer of the duet “Old McDonald had a Farm,” sung by his Aunt Jolene and accompanied sound affects by Roger. Even more so, he enjoyed spending time with his children and grandsons. His big heart, great smile and sense of humor will be missed by so many. He is survived by his wife Vickie; their children Jacob (Julie Lorenz), Zeb (Tara) and Jessie (Mathew) Peterson; his brother Ron (Dawn) Allert and sisters Pat Orr and Pam Davis; his grandchildren Beckett, Easton and Ryne Allert and Walter and Winston Peterson; his aunt Jan Craig and uncle Jack (Joyce) Bachtell; sisters-in-law Denise (Larry) Rod and Christi (Malik) West; and brother-in-law Brad (Debbie) Smrcina. He was preceded in death by his parents; his aunts Martha Stuckey and Jolene Huckstadt; brothers-in-law Jim Orr and Gary Davis; and uncles Joe Craig, William “Huck” Huckstadt and Jack Stuckey.

A memorial service will be Friday, June 17, at 11 a.m., at the Garrity Funeral Home Chapel in Prairie du Chien, Wis., with burial in the Giard Cemetery in Giard. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 9 a.m. until the time of services. Military honors will be accorded graveside.
