The MFL MarMac baseball team lost tough games to Alburnett and South Winneshiek last week, dropping their overall record to 3-6 and conference mark to 1-3.

The Bulldogs had an early 2-0 lead in the June 1 match-up at Alburnett, when the Pirates put up a three-spot in the bottom of the fourth inning. A fifth inning MFL MarMac run tied the score 3-3, before Alburnett took the lead back in the bottom of the frame with a run of their own. The Bulldogs knotted it up again in the sixth, but couldn’t hold off the Pirates, who scored once more to win 5-4.

Alburnett benefitted from four Bulldog errors in the game. Freshman pitcher Jacob Schellhorn took the loss, surrendering eight hits and a walk, but just one earned run, over five innings.

Offensively, MFL MarMac collected seven hits and four walks. Chauncy Drahn had two of those hits, along with a stolen base, while Carver Blietz-Bentien doubled and drove in a run, drew a walk and scored once. Elias Hatt also doubled and drove in a run, and Quinn McGeough singled, walked and tallied an RBI. Schellhorn’s stat line included a hit, two sacrifices and a run scored.

The task didn’t get any easier June 2, against undefeated South Winn. The Warriors put up runs in the second and third innings, before MFL MarMac cut the deficit to 2-1 in the top of the fifth. It was the last run the Bulldogs would get, though, as South Winn scored again in the fifth and sixth innings to win 5-1.

Unearned runs hurt MFL MarMac again, with three of the Warriors’ five coming that way. Pitchers Kaden Stocker and Ben Krambeer gave up just a combined four hits, but also four walks, in six innings. The Bulldog defense committed three errors.

The MFL MarMac offense had a similar four hits and four walks, but couldn’t capitalize on the opportunities. Krambeer finished the night 2-3, including a single and a double, and scored the team’s lone run. Hatt and Stocker added the other two hits—both singles—and Hatt also stole a base.

The Bulldogs will try to get back on track this week, starting with a conference doubleheader against North Fayette Valley on June 6. They’ll host Edgewood-Colesburg on June 8, then head to Turkey Valley on June 9, before welcoming Midland for two games on June 10.
