The second annual Driftless Area Ice Fisheree for Mental Health Awareness and Suicide Prevention is Saturday, Jan. 15, at The Crooked Oar in Prairie du Chien.

This year’s event is one-day only, with fishing opening at 6 a.m. and weigh-in closing at 5 p.m. Prizes will be awarded. It is Free Fishing Weekend in Wisconsin, so no license is necessary for anyone wishing to participate. Students can fish with no entry fee (present a school ID). Poles will be available for use, thanks to the local DNR.

In addition to the fishing, the Ice Fisheree is sure to be a fun day for all seeking this opportunity for awareness and to connect.

There will be a bake sale, silent auction, pong, live music, kids activity table, bonfire and s’mores, raffles, door prizes, and more to keep all ages entertained. Lunch will be available for purchase at The Crooked Oar. The Driftless Foundation apparel will also be for sale. Highlighting the day will be a memorial wall to commemorate all the loved ones lost to a mental illness battle.

Again this year, The Driftless Foundation will distribute the funds raised at the ice fisheree specifically around this local area of Crawford, Vernon, Clayton and Allamakee counties, to help fulfill the foundation’s mission.

“It’s really rewarding,” said Allie Klein, foundation president. “The more people who come, the more we can share what happens and the impact it can make. Let’s start conversations and make people realize they’re not alone, either themselves or in grieving.”
