Kuehl's clutch threes send Bulldogs to 3-1

The MFL MarMac boys basketball team improved to 3-1 in dramatic fashion last week. Down double digits in their Dec. 7 game versus South Winneshiek, the Bulldogs mounted a fourth quarter comeback capped off by a thrilling three pointer by Parker Kuehl that gave them a 57-54 victory. It was the second clutch three that night from the freshman, who only seconds earlier tied the game 54-54.
MFL MarMac trailed the Warriors just 25-22 at halftime, but stumbled out of the locker room before going on a 25-14 fourth quarter run to snatch the game back from South Winn.
The Warriors out-shot the Bulldogs 37.8 to 32.3 percent from the field, and got to the free throw line 18 more times, but weren’t as successful from behind the arc. MFL MarMac shot a whopping 29 three pointers, making 10 of them, while South Winn hit only three of 12 attempts. The Warriors also struggled to hang onto the ball, committing 20 turnovers to the Bulldogs’ 11.
Kuehl ended the night with 12 points, after going 5-9 from the field. He also grabbed four rebounds and a steal. Fellow freshman Zach Driscoll hit a couple three pointers of his own, contributing to a 15 point total, and had six rebounds and a team leading seven assists and five steals. Senior Kaden Stocker picked up 13 points—9 of which were from behind the arc—along with a rebound, steal and block. Sophomore Wyatt Powell’s stat line included 10 points, a team high eight rebounds, four assists and two steals.
The win put the Bulldogs back on track after a narrow 65-62 loss at Edgewood-Colesburg the previous night. MFL MarMac led early, 19-13, then went cold in the second quarter, as a 22-9 run propelled the Vikings to a 35-28 halftime advantage. The Bulldogs evened the score at 47 by the end of the third period, but couldn’t hold off Ed-Co.
Both teams shot well from the field that night, with a 58.1 percent clip from the Bulldogs and 53.2 percent by the Vikings. Ed-Co had a slight edge from behind the arc, going 8-15 compared to 7-18 for MFL MarMac, and had 26 rebounds to the Bulldogs’ 19.
Driscoll was tops in points for the Bulldogs, with 17, and also had a team leading seven rebounds, seven assists and three steals. Sophomore Carver Blietz-Bentien had 17 points as well, and added five rebounds, two assists and a steal to his stat line. Powell finished the night with 15 points, six assists, three rebounds and two steals.
The Bulldogs’ other two scheduled games last week—a Dec. 10 conference match-up at West Central and a Dec. 11 contest against Lanesboro at Luther College—did not take place due to weather.
MFL MarMac will play twice this week, hosting Kee (3-1) on Dec. 14 and Postville (0-3) on Dec. 17.
