Busy week for Bulldog wrestlers

The MFL MarMac wrestling team was busy last week, going 2-1 in duals and placing fourth in the Nashua-Plainfield Tournament.
It all started Dec. 7, with a triangular at Beckman Catholic, where the Bulldogs lost their first regular season dual in over a year to the host school. MFL MarMac dominated the Trailblazers early, with five straight falls by Holden Mathis (132), Bryce Radloff (138), Quinn McGeough (145), Gabe McGeough (152) and Kashton Mathis (160).
Beckman got in the win column with a forfeit at 170, before rattling off five straight pins of their own against Bulldogs Taylor Herzmann (182), Collin Henkels (195), Nolan Lerch (220), Austin Schaller (285) and TJ Coleman (106). MFL MarMac forfeited another weight at 113, before Kadence Pape picked up a win by forfeit at 120 pounds. The dual ended with a 16-0 technical fall loss by 126-pound Jack Vorwald, giving the Trailblazers a 47-36 win.
MFL MarMac wasn’t down for long, however, responding with a 54-28 win over Edgewood-Colesburg in the final dual of the night. Leading the effort were seniors Gabe McGeough and Kashton Mathis, this time wrestling at 160 and 170 pounds, who earned falls over their opponents. Seven Bulldogs—Radloff, Quinn McGeough, Henkels, Schaller, Holden Mathis, Walker Duncalf (152) and Mason Overton (285)—secured wins by forfeit.
Herzmann lost by 12-2 major decision and Pape and Vorwald were pinned in their respective matches. The Bulldogs also forfeited matches at 106 and 113 pounds.
MFL MarMac followed the win up with more dual success on Dec. 9, this time over a Wisconsin school: Lancaster. The Bulldogs came out ahead 52-27, bolstered by another strong start.
Holden Mathis earned a fall at 132 pounds, followed by a 12-3 major decision victory for Radloff at 138. Quinn McGeough earned a win by forfeit at 145, before the Bulldogs recorded three straight falls from Gabe McGeough (152), Kashton Mathis (160) and Austin Schlee (170).
The team then struggled at the heavier weights, as Herzmann (182), Henkels (195) and Lerch (220) were all pinned. Schaller and Coleman stopped the skid with forfeit wins at 285 and 106 pounds, respectively, before Keith Anderson was pinned at 113 pounds. The night wrapped up with a win by forfeit at 120 pounds for Pape and a narrow 4-0 loss for Vorwald at 126.
MFL MarMac concluded its week Dec. 11, at the Nashua-Plainfield Tournament, placing fourth of eight teams with 124 points. Host Nashua-Plainfield took the top spot with 214 points, followed by Sumner-Fredericksburg at 178 and West Hancock at 167.5.
Gabe McGeough, who’s now 12-1 on the season, cruised to first place at 152 pounds and Holden Mathis was second at 132. Anderson and Radloff were third in their respective 113- and 138-pound brackets, while Quinn McGeough finished fourth at 145 and Schaller was fourth at 220. Four Bulldogs—Vorwald (126), Kashton Mathis (160), Herzmann (182) and Henkels (195)—were all fifth, and Schlee finished sixth in the 170-pound bracket.
The Bulldogs will have a lighter schedule this week, with the girls heading to a tournament at Wilton on Dec. 18 and the boys competing in a tournament at Starmont that same day.
