Guttenberg city councilman Fred Schaub, whose term expires Jan. 1, seeks to fill the mayoral vacancy. Dr. Stephanie Radabaugh and incumbent Sue Osterhaus are running unopposed for two hospital board seats. Each elected official will serve four years.

Mayoral candidate

Fred Schaub

1) Why are you running for mayor? I want to keep Guttenberg a place to be proud of, a place where people want to live and visit. I want to help Guttenberg grow and prosper and become a community in which young professionals remain instead of moving away. Finally, I want to be a voice for the community, help citizens feel heard and their ideas and contributions recognized and appreciated.

2) What are your qualifications and background? I was born and raised in Guttenberg. I've had the honor of serving the community in a number of capacities including being a member of our Fire Department for 18 years, and serving on the City Council for eight years and participating on the 911 board. All of my experiences have assisted me in understanding what Guttenberg needs and how these needs can be addressed.

3) What is your vision for the city and what changes are needed? My vision for Guttenberg includes working to update our infrastructure. Encouraging the development of new businesses in our empty storefronts, while supporting Guttenberg's existing business. Supporting those with similar goals to work together to made Guttenberg a place we are all proud to call home.

Hospital Board

Dr. Stephanie Radabaugh

1) Why are you running for the Hospital Board? I promote health care that meets the needs of the individual, yet benefits the community as a whole. The greatest thing a hospital can do is listen to the community’s feedback for better services and strive to meet them. I would love to assist the current board in this mission.

2) What are your qualifications and background? I have lived in Guttenberg with my family all of my life minus a few years for college. I received my doctorate in research psychology in 2014, and have worked for the State of Iowa - Department of Inspections and Appeals as an inspector/investigator for the past 17 years. A large part of my occupation is to ensure health care facilities abide by state and federal regulations. This has always been a passion of mine both career wise and personally.

3) What is your vision for the hospital and what changes are needed? I am a promoter of community projects that provide access to healthy living options for our community, both young and old. As a runner and bicyclist, I would love to see our hospital continue to promote even more projects towards a healthier future. I would also like to see continued progress toward timely services and advanced healthcare options that are competitive with nearby larger communities.

Sue Osterhaus

1) Why are you running for the Hospital Board? I have always believed that our local hospital is one of Guttenberg's finest assets. Under the current leadership, the hospital has performed well in dealing with the pandemic and staffing difficulties. I would like to maintain our current direction and improve where we can so that our hospital continues to be a vibrant medical facility in the future.

2) What are your qualifications and background? I have lived in Guttenberg for over 33 years and raised my three children here. I have served on the hospital board for two terms and believe strongly in the mission of the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital. My involvement in our community helps to keep me informed and my prior banking experience helps me to understand the financial workings of the hospital.

3) What is your vision for the hospital and what changes are needed? Quality healthcare is extremely important to every member of the community. Rural hospitals struggle to keep their doors open.  Healthcare is continually changing both in knowledge and technology. GMH has and will continue to meet these challenges. I want our hospital to serve all patients with the care, dedication and dignity that every patient deserves.
