Grau and Koether lead Bulldog cross country effort on tough Tri City course

The MFL MarMac boys and girls cross country teams kicked off their 2021 season Sept. 2, with a home meet on the difficult course at Tri City Golf near Luana.
The Bulldog girls boasted two top-15 finishers, as sophomore Clare Grau crossed the line eighth with a time of 23:19.2, while senior Abby Schellhorn ran the race in 23:45.0 to place 12th. Sophomore Ruby Koeller finished 24th at 27:38.7, and junior Alexis Ross was 31st at 28:57.9.
On the boys side, junior Will Koether was MFL MarMac’s top runner, placing 20th with a time of 20:03.3. He was followed closely by freshman Tucker Ruff, whose 20:12.8 put him 21st. Placing 30th with a time of 20:58.4 was senior Caleb Nordheim, while junior Bobby Kober was 32nd at 21:09.1. Seniors Hunter Kugel and Reilly Franzen were 43rd and 46th, respectively, with times of 26:25.1 and 29:49.6.
The Bulldog boys placed sixth as a team, with 131 points. Maquoketa Valley took the top spot with 37.
MFL MarMac will compete in two meets this week: at the Guttenberg Golf and Country Club on Tuesday, Sept. 7, then at North Fayette Valley High School on Thursday, Sept. 9.
