Central volleyball looks to improve
By Willis Patenaude, Times-Register
Central volleyball coach Mike Smith was extremely tight-lipped regarding the upcoming season, not wanting to give too much away to the competition in terms of offensive and defensive changes, preparation and approach.
However, he offered the following comment on the new season: “I am very excited about the up and coming season with the girls on the volleyball team. We are a young team and are hoping to grow the best we can and everyone’s goal is to just play to our potential every match. The girls are learning to play the game better every day. We have a very tough varsity schedule with tournaments five Saturdays in a row, and that will help us keep getting better.”
This year’s team features five seniors in Brandy Beatty, Alexis Fettkether, Isabelle Groth, Alivia Keppler and Chelsia Larson, as well as five juniors, Gabbie Defazio, Aly Feickert, Lexi Loan, Kaitlyn Scherf and Karleigh Thorson.
All will look to replace graduates Ava Pensel and Maddy Wille, who were both key pieces on the offense and defense, especially Pensel, the team leader in assists and aces.
It will be up to the seniors, especially Beatty, last season’s kills leader, and Larson, the blocks leader, to set the tone if the Warriors hope to improve upon last season’s 3-20 record.
Central will kick off its season Aug. 24, at Lisbon High School.
