Thomas Lenzendorf, a Seneca High School sophomore, finished tied for second place in the State Junior Varsity Trap Shoot in Rome, Wis. on June 12.
Lenzendorf competed as a member of the Wauzeka-Steuben trap shooting team coached by LaVern Atkinson. Lenzendorf hit 92 of 100 clay targets on a windy day.
Second in the state is especially rewarding considering that it is Lenzendorf’s first year of high school trap shooting competition.
Lenzendorf is the son of Danny and Heather Lenzendorf.
Coach Atkinson said the team had its best ever showing at the state competition, taking 18th overall.
“We’re a young club, and this was only the third time we’ve been to state,” said Atkinson, who noted that eight team members will be heading to the National High School Trap Shooting Competition in Mason, Mich. from July 7-11.
Going to nationals will be Lenzendorf, Paul Krachey, LaVern Atkinson, Ben Bird, Landon Check, Andrew Udelhoven, Gabe Kapinus, and Jacob Atkinson.
“This is a growing sport and we’ve got a good group of kids,” said Atkinson. “We won first in our conference and we are doing pretty well as a beginning team.”
