One school year just ended, and MFL MarMac’s high school student council is already planning for the next one.

“There’s a lot of enthusiasm with the kids. After this year, they are ready to have fun,” said Leslie Henkes, who’s taking over for long-time adviser Megan Schellhorn.

Homecoming, which will be Sept. 24, is at the top of the list. The student council sets the schedule for the annual event, and is planning to move the Iron Man Volleyball and Powder Puff Football games back to the original Sunday night of that week.

“We maybe want to have a tailgate with that,” added Henkes. “Wednesday will be the fun day and Friday will be the parade and pep rally, then Saturday night will be the dance.”

Henkes has already reached out to groups throughout the school district about getting each of the communities more involved in homecoming.

“I’d like to have windows decorated in every town, maybe some community floats or entries,” she said. “The kids want to go back to floats rather than boards. They want to do something different.”

In addition to homecoming, student council has other activities in the works. The group organizes the school cancer awareness event each winter, and Henkes said members plan to help with the Veterans Day program, an event Schellhorn started and grew.

“I also want to do a fun activity once a month, whether we have some kind of speaker come in or a magician. Just an hour where the kids put their cellphones down and have a good time,” Henkes shared. “The kids love the fun days, and even the teachers appreciate those. We’re hoping to do more of that.”

Student council members also plan to get involved throughout the school, collaborating with other student groups like SODA (Students Opposed to Drugs and Alcohol), National Honor Society and FFA. Henkes would like to see members as representatives to the school board, the School Improvement Advisory Committee (SIAC) committee, booster club and wellness committee.

Henkes added a reporter as a new officer position, to work with the media and the school marketing team.

“I want to get some communication going with our kids and the community about the things we have,” she said.

Student council members will kick off the school year Aug. 17 with team building and leadership activities. Officers have already been selected, allowing the group to dive right into projects.

Henkes is looking forward to working with the students.

“Any young person who has ideas, I’m more than willing to listen,” she said.
