The Central girls golf team defeated MFL MarMac 249 to 275 on April 15, in the opening meet of the season at Tri City Golf Course north of Luana.

The lone medalist from Central was Madison Sylvester with a 52. The runner-up medalist, with a 54, was MFL MarMac’s Miranda Lang.

Other scores from Central were: Sophia Keppler who shot a 62, Haley Frieden with a 63, Makayla Erickson shot a 72 and Alexis Fettkether scored a 74.

Sylvester bounced back after a tough start with pars on holes 4 and 7. Frieden also came back with pars on 3 and 6. Keppler shot a quality consistent round that was highlighted with a bogey 4 on hole 9. Erickson’s best hole was a 4 on 9. Also, Fettkether had a 6 on the difficult 9 hole.

“I could not be prouder of these girls to play as well as they did. Four out five of our girls have rarely played golf. Several of them took their first swing March 18 of this year. To start the year with a win on the road is a supreme accomplishment for this team, and coach Smith and I could not be happier with them,” coach Jamie Rodenberg said.

The Central boys lost to MFL MarMac 195 to 211 that same day. Bulldog Braden Landt was medalist with a 43. Co-runner-up medalists were Gavin Meana from MFL MarMac and Tommy Seeland from Central, who both shot 48.

Seeland’s round was highlighted with a chip-in par on the tough par 4 number 5. Parker Smith shot a 50, and grinded after a difficult start. Smith came through with a par on the hilly hole 8. Evan Pensel’s round was highlighted with a par on 9, which was playing as a 220-yard par three with a brisk north wind.

Other scores for Central were: Brock Eglseder with a 61, Luke Asche shot 63, Jordan Helgerson finished the round with a 67, Karl Gardner went to the clubhouse with a 75, Tristen Weigand shot a 77 and Keaton Klingman ended with an 82.

“Even though we lost the meet, there were some positives. Our guys kept grinding after bad starts. Most of our rounds got better as they played more. Some of our players were nervous, as they have not played a competitive round for two years. We will get better, and give the Bulldogs credit, as they were the better team today,” Rodenberg said.

The teams hit the links next at Clayton Ridge on April 19, followed by a home match against South Winn on April 22.
